Pegasus Espionage: Supreme Court's decision is a setback for Central Government
The committee would "enquire, investigate, and determine," stated by the bench led by Chief Justice of India N V Ramana.
The Pegasus matter has been ordered by the Supreme Court to be
investigated by a retired Supreme Court judge. As Chief Justice NV Ramana
stated, the case will be investigated by a panel led by former Supreme Court
Judge, Justice RV Raveendran.
The investigation will be overseen by the Supreme Court. Technical
experts will also be members of the committee. The Supreme Court has also
rejected the request that the Central Government should form an expert
committee.
Former RAW chief Alok Joshi, Dr. Sudeep Oberoi, Dr. Naveen Kumar
Chaudhary (Dean, National University of Forensic Science), Dr.P. Dr. Prabaharan
(Professor, School of Engineering, Amrita University, Kollam), Ashwin Anil
Gumaste (Mumbai IIT Professor) are the other members of the committee.
The verdict was handed down on the petition that was filed by senior
journalists N. Ram, Sashi Kumar, and John Brittas MP. The petition has called
for an investigation into the Pegasus spying under the supervision of a sitting
or retired judge of the Supreme Court.
According to John Brittas' appeal, the government neither confirms nor
denies that information was breached using Pegasus software. It should be
investigated if the information was obtained by the central government or a
foreign agency. It was done unlawfully if it was done by the government. The
petition also sought an inquiry into the involvement of an outside force in the
case of a foreign agency.
